Tantra in the western society has its roots in Hinduism where holy formulas and diagrams are of importance to control the cosmic games of power. The polarity between male and feminine energies are important. The highest form of complete liberation is compared to a union between the male and the feminine energies. Intercourse is a central symbol for this union. Our challenge is to finding the spiritual dimension of the sexual energies, in order to reach the living stream of life-energy and spirituality that our bodies are made to experience.
The power of sexual love electrifies us, so that we may feel an immense bliss, which can lead us to the depths of our creativity and to the heights of spiritual consciousness, through the medium of sexual energy. This spiritual philosophy means that sexuality is a holy rite, to be compared with yoga.
The branch of Tantra, which has been mostly spread in the western societies, is the one, which developed during the highlights of the New Age movement during the 80’s where the woman is seen as an embodiment of, or a link to the female goddess mysteries, and where she is sexually liberated and multi-orgasmic. The focus in the west has been more on implementing a spiritual and ritual dimension to the sexual act, whereas in Hinduism it is rather the contrary; The sexual energies which are the highest of all energies, are used as a means of learning to control this highest and strongest of energies, in order to self-fertilize ourselves by containing the sperm for the man, and not allowing an ejaculation to occur, and thereby reaching a higher spiritual unity with the divine.
